Get your bank statements

Your bank still has the months you need. No app can pull them for you: every bank-connection service stops at 24 months, and the years you owe are further back than that. Here is the exact path, bank by bank.

Why statements matter. When the IRS files a return for you, it counts your income and none of your business expenses. Your statements are how you prove those expenses and bring the bill down.

Not listed? The steps are almost always the same: sign in on a computer, look for Statements or Documents, then change the year. Ask for the rest by phone.

Then do these three things

  1. Start with the oldest year you owe. Every January another year falls off the end, and that year is gone first.
  2. Name every file the same way: year, bank, month. 2021-Chase-03.pdf reads the same to you, to your preparer and to the IRS.
  3. Put them in your vault as you go, by upload or by forwarding them to your private vault address. Then mark that month on your tracker.

If a year is truly gone

You do not need perfect records to file. Pull your IRS Wage & Income transcript for that year, which goes back ten years and lists every W-2 and 1099 filed under your Social Security number, then reconstruct expenses from what you do have: card statements, invoices, vendor emails, calendar entries. A good-faith reconstruction beats an unfiled year every time.

This is education, not tax advice. Bank policies change; confirm details with your bank.
